Sometimes you lay in the bathtub until the water gets cold, just wishing you could stop thinking for a while. You sink your head backwards into the water until only your nose is sticking up, like the telescope on a submarine. The only thing you can hear is your breathing. Your breath just loud enough that your thoughts stop, and your heartbeat starts to calm down. You come back up, open your eyes, and then all of the noise in your head comes back to life…So you add just a little bit more hot water, because right now you just aren’t able to grade another paper, hang up that shirt laying in the floor, move those clean dishes from the sink to the cabinet, read another email, or even rinse the shampoo from your hair.
Right now, you’re only able to hear yourself breathe.
..And there are people who don’t understand that sometimes these little things can be too much to do, but they don’t need to understand why, just to know that sometimes, sometimes they are.
